Earn money with the Renewable Heat Incentive

If you’re considering a biomass boiler for your home, one of your main concerns will be eligibility for the Renewable Heat incentive (RHI). In case you don’t know, the RHI is a Government scheme to support the installation of renewable technology. It pays you for the heat you generate for seven years, providing a fantastic return on investment.

But to become eligible for this incredible reward, there are a few mandatory things you need to undertake. And one of them is to have Green Deal Assessment of your home. The assessment calculates how energy efficient your property is and will cost around £150.

Although it could be an inconvenience, £150 is nothing compared to the thousands of pounds you’ll earn with the RHI. With the assessment your home will be given an energy rating between A and G. It can be a great way to find out other areas of your home to improve at the same time, such as loft lagging or wall cavity insulation.

It’s up to you which order you do things in, but typically it makes sense to have the assessment first. Then you’ll have any issues highlighted and be able to make necessary changes before investing in the biomass boiler.

Of course, if you’re worried about the trustworthiness of a specific advisor, ensure having the assessment completed by an independent company, rather than one tied to a specific provider.

Bear in mind though that as part of the Green Deal, all advisors are required to give impartial advice. If an advisor intends to sell as well, they must notify you of this before the assessment takes place.

The Department of Energy and Climate Change say: “Because renewable heating systems work best in a well-insulated home, the domestic renewable heat incentive works alongside the green deal.

“Before applying, you must first have a green deal assessment carried out for your property. If the resulting green deal advice report (GDAR) recommends loft and cavity wall insulation they must be installed before you can claim RHI. There may be certain circumstances that prevent their installation.

“This will be accepted provided you include valid evidence to support this as part of your RHI application. The recommendation of the renewable heating system in the GDAR is not a requirement of the RHI.”
